Australia's annual progress report on cetacean research to the International Whaling CommissionAs a member of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), Australia is required to provide an annual scientific progress report summarising cetacean related activities in Australian waters over the previous calendar year. Each year, scientific researchers, state and federal agencies, and other stakeholders submit progress reports summarizing cetacean related information requested by the IWC. These reports are first compiled at the state/territory level before the Australia-wide report is compiled at the AMMC. We then submit the finalized report to the IWC Scientific Committee. Previous year’s progress reports can be downloaded with the following links: Australia progress report for 2007 The IWC Scientific Committee next meets in Madeira, Portugal in May 2009. In preparation for this, we are requesting information regarding cetacean related activities for the calendar year 2008. If you are a cetacean researcher or stakeholder, any summary information relevant to the IWC on research, sightings, non-natural mortality (e.g. bycatch, ship-strikes) and publications would be welcome. Your contribution will help underline the extent and quality of non-lethal research on whales and dolphins in Australian waters. Information can be submitted by downloading and filling out the current progress report template. These should be emailed to the relevant state/territory contact where the work was conducted by the 27th of February, 2009 if at all possible.
State/Territory Coordinators:
QLD: Jenny Greenland (EPA) Please email ammccoordinator@aad.gov.au for contact details for the state/territory coordinators or any other questions. The report template has been simplified somewhat in recent years to facilitate brief summary entries in the consistent format required by the IWC Secretariat. The template has particularly important instructions highlighted in yellow, and example entries to the tables are marked with “e.g”. Last year’s completed report can also be viewed to see a finalized and edited report, and how concise individual descriptions should be. It would be greatly appreciated if you could edit your submissions to follow this format.
