IWC reports
The International Whaling Commission (IWC) is the international agency responsible for the conservation and management of whales and whaling. The Australian Marine Mammal Centre works closely with the IWC by providing high quality science to support the policies of the Australian Government and thereby increase the protection and conservation of whales.
Scientists from the Marine Mammal Centre attend annual meetings of the IWC Scientific Committee and the Commission where they ensure that the best available science is available for decision making. They present results from research projects to the Scientific Committee including papers on the estimation of the size of whale populations, ecosystem management and genetic population structure. They also provide a critical review of science put forward by whaling nations.
