Research Interests
My primary expertise and interests are in the development of acoustic methods and technologies for the study of ecology and population dynamics of highly exploited species. I have worked extensively on the acoustics of different blue and fin whale populations. I conducted my dissertation studies on blue and fin whale acoustics off the Western Antarctic Peninsula. Most recently, my work has been focused off Southern California, but I have a continued interest in polar ecosystems and ecology of exploited species in those regions and still participate in collection of passive acoustic data off Antarctic Peninsula. I am involved with the development of metadata standards for acoustic data processing and standardizing methods for analysis of long-term datasets. These steps are critical for increasing our ability to quantitatively compare results across different passive acoustic studies. The IWC-SORP Acoustic Trends Steering Group (ATG) is a perfect venue to work on the development of these standards and truly test the power of passive acoustic data on a large scale.
